Born on November 6 1945, McCamel was known for his political activism during the struggle.

After Jordan High School he enrolled at Bethel Training Institution, where he completed his secondary education.

He gained a teacher's diploma from Wilberforce Teachers Training College and also attained a diploma in Christian education and theology. McCamel taught at Ditau Primary School in Orlando East, Soweto, Phomolong in Evaton, Mqiniswa in Bophelong and at Wilberforce Training Institution.

He was a superintendent of hostels and then became principal.

He received nine awards for community work, development and a leadership and an honorary doctorate in divinity.
