The surviving relatives of the 13 Mazubane family members who died have taken what is left of the concoction that allegedly killed them to a traditional healer for testing.

The police are conducting an investigation, including a postmortem, but the family says it won't wait for the police. They will do their own investigation to shed light on the deaths in Dingleton.

Family spokesman Monica Mazubane said they believed that the dead had inhaled izinyamazane (crushed mixed herbs) that turned out to be fatal.

Simon Mazubane, 63, his wife Zimephi, 60, daughters Gabisile, 35, Philisiwe, 30, Phumlile, 32, Phumzile 30, sons Mxolisi and Percy, 16, grandchildren Nkazimulo 8, Aphiwe 2, Andile 3, Khethukuthula 1, and one-month-old Thabelo were found dead on Sunday afternoon.

Ugu district mayor Siyabonga Cwele said they would help with the funeral since the family could not afford it.
