If you are a jazz music lover, then you will be thrilled to know that it's that time of the year when the Vaal Jazz By the River takes place.

After a two-year lull, throngs of aficionados will converge on the 14th annual Vaal Jazz By The River Festival, on Sunday, drawing masses to the scenic yet forlorn Dickinson Park.

A Sedibeng and Emfuleni municipalities' initiative, it will unleash great artists like Salif Keita, Hugh Masekela, Gloria Bosman, Ringo and Bhudaza, who will be supported by local development bands. Music lovers experienced some hiccups getting into the venue last time. However, the municipalities have assured them that, thanks to the renovations, all those entry blues will be a thing of the past.

The organisers and the municipalities have developed a comprehensive traffic plan to ensure easier traffic flow. Specially demarcated areas have been set aside for braaing.

The festival is expected to inject life into the area's tourism industry. By attracting visitors to the Vaal, hospitality and leisure businesses are expected to grow. This will result in increased economic activity, empowerment of local entrepreneurs and realising the tourism development goals.

"The Vaal provides a splendid backdrop to enjoy top-class musical acts," says festival promoter and T-Musicman chairman Peter Tladi.

Music workshops will also be held over three days for budding musicians and aspiring promoters. The project is dubbed Strings and Business.

Tickets for the festival will cost R150 at Computicket and Shoprite outlets.
