The executive mayor of the Greater Sekhukhune district municipality in Limpopo has advised communities in the area to till the land in view of rising food prices and other challenges..

Namane Masemola was speaking during the celebration of the Tsate Heritage Festival at Ntswaneng village at the weekend.

The yearly event is one of the most prominent heritage celebrations in Sekhukhune.

It also incorporates the remembrance of King Sekhukhune I's Wars of Resistance.

Masemola urged communities to go back to their fields and "till the lands in view of skyrocketing food prices.

"King Sekhukhune's empire was very powerful because many of his people produced and processed their own food," he said.

"We can be as powerful, faced with the rising food prices and other socioeconomic challenges, by going back to the fields."

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation declared Tsate a heritage site two years ago.
