Just as Jacob Zuma is contesting the charges levelled against him by the state without being afforded a chance to defend himself in court, the NPA also has the right to appeal the judgment if they feel hard done by it.
I am often amazed by the way Gwede Mantashe, the ANC general secretary, defends his president, even when there is nothing to defend. He said on TV before the September 12 judgment that the charges were now different to those Zuma was first accused of.
That is misrepresenting facts. The charges were increased, not changed. Why does the ANC think that recharging Zuma would be acting against the interests of the people and the nation? I think recharging him would be acting in line with his wish to get his day in court. It is a matter of national interest because it will prove once and for all that there is not one law for the public and another for politicians. No politician is above the law.
South Africa will be a laughing stock if we allow what Mantashe is saying to happen. Why does he think the NPA would miss a chance if they recharge Zuma? Which world is the ANC living in?
South Africa will be turned into a banana republic if Zuma is not recharged and the charges are quashed without clearing the potential president of the country. The cloud hanging over him can only be cleared in a court.
