Three Mpumalanga policemen were dismissed this week after they were found guilty of corruption by an internal disciplinary hearing.

On Wednesday, sergeant Martin Mahlako, 42, and reserve constables Patrick Kolobe, 26, and Vicky Masemola, 38, were kicked out of the police service after being found guilty of corruption.

This brings to seven the number of policemen fired in the province in the past two months. .

The other four officers were dismissed after disciplinary hearings held in August and September following their arrests on charges of fraud and corruption.

On February 6, the three Mhluzi-based police officers were arrested by the provincial organised crime unit for forcing suspects arrested for theft to hand over goods they had stolen. They also forced them to pay certain amounts of cash as bribes for them not to be arrested.

"In another incident, a police captain's house was broken into. Two suspects were arrested by the three officers and most of the stolen goods were recovered," said spokesman Captain Leonard Hlathi.

"It was later discovered that some of the stolen goods were sold to a foreign national by the three cops," he said.

The three are still to appear in court. They are currently out on bail ranging from R2000 to R3000.

Also dismissed was inspector Isaac Nobunga, 48, of Bushbuckridge. Nobunga charged job seekers hoping to be police officers R2500 for "jobs" in the SAPS.

Also dismissed last month were constables Veli Mlombo, 32, and Cedric Khoza, 32, of KaNyamazane. The two were found to have approached a rape suspect and told him to give them a certain amount of money so they "could make his case vanish".

Constable Mendour Matsabe, 29, of White River police station has also been fired. He had sold temporary liquor licences for R300, instead of giving them out for free.
