Angry Mhluzi residents in Middelburg attacked and looted businesses belonging to Pakistani nationals in the township in revenge for a murdered Mpumalanga youth.

The incident occurred on Tuesday after the arrest of a Pakistani national Abdul Hussein following the fatal shooting of Eric Thobela, 21, of Ext 5 in Mhluzi township on Saturday.

Captain Leonard Hlathi of the Mpumalanga organised crime unit confirmed the murder and subsequent violence that followed the news of the businessman's arrest.

Hlathi said the two men were last seen drinking together in Hussein's shop on the day of the killing.

After the drinking session Hussein closed shop and allegedly asked Thobela to accompany him and help him steal from a property in the area.

"Before they left Hussein allegedly disguised himself by applying black polish to his face," Hlathi said.

"They were gone for a while but Hussein later returned alone and immediately left again carrying a litre of paraffin.

"Later Thobela's burnt body was found with a bullet wound to the head on the side of the road in Ext 5."

Hussein will appear in court again on Monday on charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
