The labour department official wanted in connection with murder, attempted murder and kidnapping has been arrested after a month on the run.
Brighten Musa Sithole, 39, was taken into police custody yesterday by members of the Mpumalanga organised crime unit. He was deputy director of communication in the department.
Sithole allegedly went on a rampage, stabbing to death Margaret Kolobe, 22, and wounding Gabisile Kolobe, 19, in the left breast and arm.
He also stabbed a youth, Themba Mahamba, in the armpit.
The incident took place on August 15 at Siyabuswa in KwaNdebele when an apparently furious Sithole went to look for his girlfriend, who had gone to visit her parents.
Captain Leonard Hlathi said Sithole, who had been in hiding in KwaZulu-Natal, was arrested in Durban yesterday.
Hlathi said Sithole's movements were being monitored in KwaZulu-Natal until yesterday when detectives pounced while he was sitting in a car in Umlazi, Durban.
He said the police left Mpumalanga on Tuesday night and found him in a Toyota Tazz, apparently waiting for someone shortly after 10am.
"As we speak, he is being transported back to Mpumalanga where the crime was committed," Hlathi said.
"He will be charged and kept in Middleburg until his court appearance later this week in Siyabuswa."
Sithole was also alleged to have kidnapped sickly Nhlanhla Mnguni, 20, and Given Mnguni, 14.
He left Nhlanhla at her grandmother's house and took Given, who was still in his underwear, to Delmas where they spent the night before he took the boy, still in underwear, with him to KwaZulu-Natal on August 16.
A day later Sithole gave Given R230 before bundling him into a taxi to Johannesburg.
At Park Station the boy boarded another taxi that took him to Mamelodi.
Mpumalanga police fetched him from the Mamelodi police station later that day.
Family members said Sithole had scaled the locked gates at his girlfriend's parents' home, kicked the door open and stabbed Themba Mahamba with a knife while other family members escaped unharmed.
He then grabbed Nhlanhla, a kidney patient, threw her over the fence and into a waiting car and instructed her to take him and his friend to her grandmother's house.
