It is back to square one for Majimbos after they were shown an early exit in the 2009 Africa Under-17 Championships qualifiers' first round.

The South African Under-17 national soccer squad, who are guided by Teboho Moloi, were defeated 2-1 by Malawi in Blantyre on Saturday.

Malawi won 3-1 on aggregate after striker Andy Simukonde scored the only goal of the game in their first leg match in Eldorado Park two weeks ago.

They are through to the second round of this biennial continental competition, with the finals scheduled for Algeria next year.

The early elimination of Majimbos comes a week after Bafana Bafana also failed to qualify for the 2010 MTN Africa Cup of Nations finals in Angola.

The South African Under-23s also failed to go through to the finals of the Beijing Olympics after failing to win a single game in the qualifiers.

The failure of the local junior national teams to qualify for major global competitions is a cause for concern to many South Africans.

With Bafana Bafana and Majimbos out of the continental finals, the focus is now on Amajita and Amabinneplaas, who are busy with their qualifiers. Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka is the coach of both national teams.
