Police in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, have launched a manhunt for a man who set a woman's room alight with her furniture and clothes in it after she allegedly turned down his proposal that they have sex.
It is alleged that the furious man stormed into the woman's room and "proposed love". The man had allegedly been trying to persuade her for a long time.
The irate man allegedly visited the woman -who rents a room - to try his luck one more time. His plea fell on deaf ears so he decided to burn down the woman's room.
Damage to the room is estimated at R15000, according to police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela.
Magudulela said the police were investigating a case of arson and malicious damage to property.
The police have appealed to anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspect to contact Superintendent Dumisani Khoza on 034 314 6193.
In a separate incident, also in Newcastle, a municipal worker was gunned down while relaxing in his house after work on Tuesday night.
It is alleged that the 40-year-old man was shot in the body and mouth.
Magudulela said a man who was walking near the deceased's home told the police that he had seen two people getting out of a red Toyota Corolla with Durban registration numbers. Minutes later he heard gunshots.
"A police officer who was on his way to work went to investigate after hearing the gunshots," Magudulela said. "He saw a bleeding man staggering around in the yard.
"The officer stopped to help. When he realised the man had been shot, he called for back-up."
Magudulela said the victim fell on the pavement outside his yard and died. Newcastle police have opened a murder case.
