Two cop killers got as good as they gave yesterday when they were shot dead after opening fire on the police.

The two men, believed to be behind the killing last month of "super cop" Superintendent Zethembe Chonco, were shot dead by the police near Pietermaritzburg.

Police also shot and killed another suspect implicated in Chonco's murder earlier this month.

The two suspects shot yesterday were identified as Sibusiso Thokozani Tembe, 32, and Magojela Ndimande, 37.

Lindani "Lee" Buthelezi was shot dead when police swooped on his KwaDukuza home.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the police received a tip-off that the two suspects would be travelling in a grey Hyundai Tuscan near Merrivale in Howick.

He said the police tried to stop the vehicle but the occupants opened fire.

"The police were forced to return fire with the intention of stopping the vehicle, which eventually came to a halt," Budhram said.\

"One suspect tried to flee on foot and was fatally wounded by the police."

When the police approached the vehicle they found one suspect already dead in the car.

"An AK-47 rifle, an assault rifle and two 9mm handguns and ammunition were recovered."

Budhram said the police believed that Ndimande was the kingpin behind the gruesome shooting of Chonco on August 27.

Chonco headed the province's taxi violence unit and his untimely death was widely condemned.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old illegal immigrant has been arrested by the Pongola police after he was caught at a roadblock with a 25 litre bucket full of stolen cash.

Inspector Bonginkosi Mkhize said a man from Mozambique was caught carrying R10700 stolen from the Nazareth Baptist Church.

He said the man had been hired by a Shembe Church priest in Mtubatuba to build a house.

"The suspect is facing a charge of theft and one of being in the country illegally," Mkhize said.
