The principal of a Limpopo school for mentally-impaired children is in hiding after a squabble with angry pupils.

The principal, Daphne Madiba, has abandoned her post at Grace and Hope School for the Mentally Impaired in Seshego, outside Polokwane. She did not report for school on Monday and yesterday.

The pupils have complained about the quality and amount of food they have been receiving in their hostels.

The angry pupils sang and danced in front of their classrooms and barricaded the school gates to stop Madiba from entering.

She had to take cover when the pupils, armed with stones and sticks, confronted her at the gate.

A spokesman for the pupils, Tebogo Mufamadi, said the trouble started when management reduced the amount of food for lunch and supper in July.

Matters came to a head last Thursday when teachers told the pupils that a trip to Cape Town might be cancelled.

The Limpopo School Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired had selected 29 pupils from the school for the national schools' competition in Cape Town on September 27.

Provincial spokesman for the department of education Ndo Mangala said the department was investigating the situation at the school.
