The long arm of the law has finally caught up with a Limpopo man who allegedly shot dead a pensioner and left his wife fighting for her life.

The man had been on the run for a week after attacking the couple at Mageva village near Giyani.

The incident happened on September 7 when the man allegedly entered the couple's home and shot them several times.

The 74-year-old disabled man died on the spot after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, while his wife was taken to hospital where she is said to be recuperating.

The attacker fled the scene.

It was only after police received information from the 60-year-old woman that they pursued the suspect. He was arrested on Monday in Sandton, Johannesburg.

Police spokesman Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday described the 25-year-old man's arrest as a breakthrough.

He identified the dead man as Jim Mabunda. The arrested man is from Ndhambi village.

Ngoepe said Mabunda's wife was left for dead.

"The suspect sprayed the couple with a hail of bullets.

"He apparently thought they were both dead when he fled the scene," said Ngoepe.

He said the motive for the attack was still unknown and that investigations were continuing.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Giyani magistrate's court today.
