The department of sports, arts and culture in Free State has adopted a programme by soccer legends to develop the sport in the province.

"Soccer in the Zone" is a project initiated by various coaches like Stanley "Screamer" Tshabalala, Serame "Rhee" Letsoaka and Molefi Ntseki.

Former professional soccer stars like Wellington Manyathi, Vela Khumalo, Nkoko Malefane and Fees Moloi are also involved in the development project.

"We approached the MEC [Ace Magashule] to say we wanted to assist in developing the sport and he bought into the idea," said Tshabalala. "We are targeting Free State youngsters between the ages 10 and 16; we work closely with the schools in the province."

Magashule said: "Screamer, Serame and the other guys involved in this project are doing a wonderful job to help us in develop soccer in Free State.

"It is one of the 2010 World Cup legacy projects and will help us continue producing youngsters to play for our junior national teams."
