The newly-signed deal between Zanu-PF and the two factions of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is a victory not only for Zimbabweans but also for the region, and Africa as whole, constitutional expert Shadrack Gutto said yesterday.
Gutto said all the parties had learnt from the deal that "dogmatism, self-righteousness and populism" could not deliver the people of Zimbabwe from the sufferings they endured for the past nine years under a one-party rule.
"The challenge for them is now to provide leadership rather than promoting their own political ambitions," said Gutto.
He said Zanu-PF had learnt that having access to instruments of repression was not enough to rule a country on the path to change.
MDC, under Morgan Tsvangirai, had also learnt that having powerful supporters outside was not enough, said Gutto. He said the 21st century was "hell for Zimbabweans" but the deal had now brought hope to them for a better future.
"This deal is not the end but the beginning of building a better future for Zimbabwe," said Gutto.
He said all African states should support the new process of rebuilding Zimbabwe.
Africans, he said, must also celebrate that they found an African solution to a problem that affected their own people.
