Well done to Free State boxing promoter Blacky Seoe who with the Free State sports department presented a boxing tournament as part of Kestell's 100th anniversary celebrations last Friday.
It sounds weird to others to hear that boxing, a barbaric and brutal sport, they say, was part of the celebrations.
Yes it was, whether you like it or not and fight-starved fans in that small town came in droves to witness something they have never seen in their area.
Now it is only natural for a good thing to have its bad side - so did that tournament and Seoe must shoulder the blame for it.
Sir, your generosity of free admission just does not work. The hall was like a gas chamber. It was damn hot, there were no air conditioning and to make matters worse all the windows were tightly closed.
It spoilt my interest. I just wanted to get out quickly before I was caught up in a stampede. That hall was packed. Mind you, masses were left outside. The organisation inside was not very good. I had serious problems getting a seat yet I was there to render a service.
Security personnel were terrible. In fact those poor guys tried to control the fans but they soon realised that they were fighting a losing battle.
To Seoe and company - stage your tournaments in a stadium during the day when everyone can walk in free, enjoy proceedings free and have a drink free if you want to continue with your generosity.
Other than that, sorry chaps - I foresee disaster and that is not what you want. Understood, Seoe, you cannot charge people in a government-funded activity but still control is a must otherwise the same government will come down hard on you should lives be lost.
Boxing was not that great but hey, the atmosphere was wonderful though too hot to handle. I take my leave.
