Soweto police are looking for the family of a man, believed to be in his 30s, who committed suicide by setting himself alight.

The man allegedly doused himself with petrol and then set himself alight on the Soweto Highway bridge in Diepkloof.

Police spokesman Captain Phephi Matlou said: "The incident happened on August 22. No one has come to look for him.

"We do not even know his name and fingerprints cannot be taken because he was burnt beyond recognition."

Matlou said the man would be given a pauper's burial if his body had not been identified by October 7.

She said any family who has a member who has gone missing should contact the investigating officer, Inspector Chris Mathebula, on 079-890-7485.
