Dedicated nurse

Emily Mokgadi Malatse was a very passionate and strict nurse.

All the patients at Ekurhuleni's Wattville clinic wanted Malatse to attend to them. When she retired, they all begged her to return.

The no-nonsense Malatse was born in Etwatwa Old Location on November 17 1936. She attended the Berlin Primary School in Benoni and completed her junior certificate at Etwatwa High School.

Malatse started working in Boksburg but her desire to serve her community saw her pursuing nursing at the Groothoek Hospital in Pietersburg in 1969. She qualified as a general nurse in 1972.

She worked at the Knights Chest Hospital in Germiston for a year and later at Baragwanath Hospital, where she studied midwifery.

She moved back to Benoni to take up a midwifery post and went back to school at night to study for matric.

Former colleague and friend Charlotte Moreosele said she would remember Malatse as a dedicated nurse.

Malatse is survived by a son and daughter. She will be buried tomorrow at the Ekurhuleni East Cemetery. The service starts at 6:30am in the Lutheran Church.
