Academic dies after surgery

Solomon Phihlo Phatake Mminele, affectionately known as Ngwana wa Mobu, died on September 4 after a short illness.

Family spokesman Mamoruti Monama said the academic died two days after an operation.

Born on June 10 1937 in the Sekhukhuni district, Mminele started school in Magakala and Magabaneng in Dilokong village.

He then attended Botshabelo Secondary and matriculated at Mokopane-Sefakaole High in 1957.

At Pretoria Bantu Normal College he graduated with a BA and BEd in 1973 and 1979, respectively. Two more degrees followed in 1984 and 1989 from the University of the North.

His first teaching job was at Mokopane High. In 1986 he joined the University of the North to lecture in the history of education. He retired in 1998.

His is survived by three children and 10 grandchildren. The service is at Botshabelo Lutheran Church tomorrow. He will be buried at the local cemetery.
