Newcastle police have launched a massive manhunt after a woman and her 12-year-old daughter were found murdered in their home in the area.

The bodies of the 45-year-old woman and her daughter were found at their Aviary Hill home. The woman's husband, a businessman, is away on a trip to Taiwan in Asia.

The police said the woman had been strangled and her daughter hanged. They were discovered in the passage leading to the main bedroom.

Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela said their bodies where found by relatives who had gone to check on the pair as the woman's husband was away.

They found the sliding gate slightly open.

"The relatives became suspicious since the gate clearly showed someone had used force to gain entry," Magudulela said.

"The relatives alerted a traffic officer who is a family friend. The officer found the garage door open and clothing and other items strewn all over the rooms and passages."

Magudulela said the police were called to the scene. He said a Toyota Tazz, registration NN 65562, and electrical items, including TV sets, and other undisclosed household belongings were stolen.

"A BMW in the garage was broken into and the stereo stolen. The police are investigating a case of robbery and two counts of murder," he said.
