Two senior Correctional Services officials have been suspended following allegations of maladministration and corruption.

The two were suspended yesterday by Department of Correctional Services National Commissioner Vernie Petersen.

The allegations against Regional Commissioner for Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West Patrick Gilligham and Regional Commissioner for Free State and Northern Cape Zach Modise were made on August 11 by the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU).

Petersen also ordered that an external investigation be instituted into the allegations. He said he had received a report from the special investigations unit last month pointing to serious tender irregularities.

Other senior officials are also implicated, according to Petersen.

"The special investigations unit is continuing with its probe and will include interviews with key officials involved in the tender process," he said.

"Earlier this year I received information regarding the conduct of the regional commissioner (Modise).

"I called the senior manager and regional commissioner to a meeting at which it was agreed that an external investigation be instituted."
