A Pietermaritzburg policeman has shot and killed a pedestrian who allegedly fired shots at him .
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Superintendent Henry Budhram said yesterday that the policeman, acting on a tip-off, was searching for a suspect at a tavern in the Imbali area on Sunday. When the suspect could not be found, the officer left.
"While driving in the vicinity, he saw a group of men walking in the opposite direction.
"As he came closer, one of the men opened fire on his vehicle fand the policeman returned fire," said Budhram.
Two people in the group were wounded and one later died in hospital.
The second person - being investigated in a murder case - is in a serious but stable condition and under police guard.
