More than 100 public libraries in Limpopo will be fully equipped with modern computer technology to afford students in previously disadvantaged communities an opportunity to access the Internet.

The programme is funded from R42million set aside by the sports, arts and culture department to upgrade technology at public libraries.

Through this programme a total of 152 computers will be handed over to 104 libraries throughout the province.

This was said by sports, arts and culture MEC Joyce Mashamba during the handover of five computers at Letsitele on Friday.

Mashamba said municipalities had been requested to decide how many libraries should benefit from the project.

"I am confident people in this area will use the equipment to improve their knowledge, skills and experience of life outside the environment they are used to," Mashamba said.

She said pupils would be expected to use the technology to compete with their peers everywhere in the world.

According to Letsitele librarian Marie van der Walt the equipment will benefit students from villages such as Mariveni, Bonn, Sedan and N'wamitwa.
