The nine suspended Mangosuthu University of Technology students have asked the council to intervene in what they believe was an unfair suspension.

The students, members of the South African Democratic Student Movement (Sadesmo), have sent a letter to council chairman and eThekwini mayor Obed Mlaba stating that they believed the council would handle their appeal fairly.

The students were expelled for a year after they were found guilty of initiating an illegal strike in February.

Sadesmo provincial chairman Brian Masondo said yesterday they had written to the council asking them to intervene and to attend to the appeal lodged more than a month ago.

"We are convinced that with the council's assistance, justice will be done," said Masondo.

Council chairman Mlaba yesterday confirmed that he had received a letter from the students.

He said that as the present vice-chancellor had been asked to take compulsory leave and they had appointed an acting vice-chancellor, the matter would be handled by the university administration.

"Their matter will be dealt with by the administration unless there is an agreement to get the council involved," he said.
