A greater number of participating teams featured in this year's Smart Young Mindz Challenge.

This initiative encourages high school pupils in Gauteng to develop an interest in technical subjects.

This corporate social investment and responsibility programme of Blue IQ and the Gauteng government is supported by the Gauteng department of education and Sowetan.

Smart Young Mindz is open to Gauteng pupils in grades 8, 9 and 10.

More than 160 final submissions were submitted after a series of induction sessions were conducted by comedian Shonisani "Ashifashabba" Muleya.

About 80 percent of the 60 schools that entered the challenge submitted all three parts of the challenge. These were marketing, tourism and communications; environmental affairs; and justice and constitutional development. Three top-achieving teams will share R100000, of which:

l A whopping R50000 will go to the overall winners, with each member bagging R8000 plus a R1000 cellphone. Their school will receive R5000;

l Members of the second-placed team will receive R4000 each plus a cellphone worth R1000. Their school will receive R5000;

l For the third-placed team, each pupil will get R2000 and a cellphone worth R1000. Their school will receive R5000.

Pupils taking part were required to tackle the challenges by:

l Developing a slang dictionary that incorporates at least 100 words and sayings, with meanings in English;

l Highlighting Gauteng's reputation as one of the most politically and culturally unique regions in the country;

l Coming up with innovative alternative power sources for those South Africans who cannot afford electricity, gas and solar energy;

l And providing water recycling solutions for residential areas where pollution is a challenge.
