Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg will come alive on October 3 when the much-anticipated Field Band Championship takes place.
About 15 field bands will be competing for the first position. Field bands that will be competing in the First Division on October 3 include Alexandra Field Band, De Beers Blouberg Field Band, Anglo Coal Field Band, Shatterprufe Northern Eagles Field Band, Daveyton Field Band and De Beers Cullinan Field Band.
Competing in the Premier Division on October 4 will be Stocks Anglo Field Band, De Beers Musina Field Band, De Beers Northern Cape Field Band, Mdantsane Field Band, PFG Londulusha Field Band, Cape Whaler's Field Band, De Beers Kimberley Field Band and PG Bison Buccaneers Field Band.
Music lovers who enjoy the sound of percussions, trumpets and marimbas are in for a treat. Hundreds of youths are expected to descend on the Turffontein Racecourse to watch the bands battling it out.
The South African Field Band that recently represented the country at a music festival in Norway will give a guest performance at the championships. It will not be alone in stage but will be joined by the Empangeni High School Show Band and the SANDF Band.
Herman Mashaba, chairman of the Field Band Foundation, will officially open the proceedings.
The foundation was established in 1997 by philanthropists Bertie and Ronnie Lubner, based on the American marching band concept, designed to create opportunities for the development of life skills in the youth through the medium of music and dance.
The event starts at 9am and the entry is free.
