The SA Post Office has warned the public of a scam in which potential victims receive an SMS informing them that they have won a car.
"We at the Post Office would like to state that we're not part of this scam and that we have informed our tellers at all our outlets of this scheme," said spokesman Lungile Lose.
"We warn our customers against responding to any messages of this nature."
The message, which originates from a telephone number in Kenya, requests the receiver to buy postal orders of various amounts and post them to an address in Kenya.
Three consecutive messages are received, starting with one that typically reads: "Japan International Motor Dealers: announces you the winner of a Toyota Land Cruiser VX Model 2008. Call the Africa head office on +254712319651 for details."
Lose said this message is followed by another that reads "send R2000 through the Post Office to Mr Tobis Awiti identity number: 24833966, PO Box 214, 0005, Nairobi, Kenya."
"The third message would read 'after sending the money we shall send you the flight number, the date and time of departure and arrival at Oliver Tambo International Airport, thank you', said Lose, adding that the messages may vary from time to time.
He said the PO had a dedicated division that dealt with all forms of crime. "In this instance, we are closely cooperating with our counterparts in Kenya to bring the culprits to book."
