Overcrowding at Limpopo's Kgapane Hospital mortuary will be a thing of the past following the construction of a new state-of-the art forensic laboratory in the area.
The complex was built from the R15million allocated by the provincial department of health to upgrade the Kgapane and St Ritas hospitals this financial year.
Provincial health spokesman Phuti Seloba said other laboratories had already been built in Tshilidzini, Elim and Letaba.
He said the department was also planning more forensic laboratories around the province to help speed up services.
Seloba said the project would create about 300 permanent jobs after completion, and that more people were currently benefiting from casual employment.
He said the facility would help reduce overcrowding in the hospital's mortuary and bring relief for bereaved families in the Bolobedu area.
"Our dead will now be accommodated in a dignified place while waiting to be collected by their relatives for burial," said Seloba.
More than 300 locals have been employed as casuals since the construction started earlier this year.
The construction of the complex started in April, and will be completed before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, Kgapane Hospital chief executive, Benny Moshobane welcomed the department's initiative and said this was a great step towards improving service delivery to the people.
He said the facility would also benefit the neighbouring Duiwels-kloof Hospital.
