It was a day filled with excitement as vehicle tracking company Tracker honoured South African Police Services (SAPS) members who excelled in vehicle recovery across the country.

This was the sixth edition of the National Tracker-SAPS Awards, held at Bondev House in Centurion on Friday.

The awards were given to police units and individuals who made a significant impact in using Tracker's technology in the recovery of stolen and hijacked cars.

Tracker-SAPS awards were given to best provincial and individual winners, as units and individuals.

The winners each received a certificate and a trophy, and a donation was made on their behalf to a charity of their choice.

Tracker is the only vehicle tracking company in South Africa to formally partner with the SAPS and have its technology installed in 1100 police vehicles and 42 aircraft.

In the decade since the partnership began a total of 40876 vehicles have been recovered, leading to 7498 arrests and the closure of 303 chop shops.

"This is a small token of appreciation for the hard work that is done by SAPS members in fighting vehicle theft and hijacking," said Tracker's CEO Alan Hutcheson.

Inspector Pieter Stander of Komatipoort crime intelligence in Mpumalanga was the overall individual winner, with more than 48 vehicles recovered over and above those that are Tracker-activated in the past year.

Information from sources made it easier to make arrests, he said.

"I did not do it alone and I am grateful for the award. It is a motivation," Stander said.
