"We would know, for instance, that parenthood was a shared responsibility, which resided among members of the community.

"Education and the dispensing of justice were also seen as a community responsibility.

"This is why we believe that community members themselves could best tackle many of the challenges which the government deals with today. This means that we do not always require a bureaucratic response by government to address some of the challenges which communities themselves can address.

"We believe, for instance, that issues such as crime and moral regeneration can be effectively addressed at a community level if our communities are united and organised.

"Community building is about activism. It is about uplifting the spirit of the community and bridging the bridges, which only the community can build." - Limpopo Premier Sello Moloto, addressing the launch of the Limpopo chapter of the Community Builders of South Africa, which is a developmental home of the previous winners of the Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Award in Polokwane on April 11, 2008.
