As expected, Dennis Mumble, the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee chief competitions manager, has resigned.

Mumble reportedly had a heated argument with a top official at the LOC two weeks ago, which prompted him to leave after the meeting.

Sowetan knows who the top official in question is, but cannot mention names as the person could not be reached for comment.

Mumble did not come to work until Wednesday when he submitted his letter of resignation to LOC chief executive, Danny Jordaan.

"Yes, I can confirm that Dennis has resigned, citing personal reasons. I had several discussions with him on the matter, but we have to respect his wish," Jordaan said. "It's definitely a major blow. We will always remember him for the huge contribution he made when he was still working with us.

"An announcement will be made once a suitable candidate for the position has been identified and employed."

Mumble was one of the first staff members of the LOC after it was established four years ago after winning the bid to host the tournament.

Before that he was the general manager of Soccer City.
