The Independent Complaints Directorate in KwaZulu-Natal said yesterday that it had commissioned a private and independent pathologist to conduct a second postmortem into the death of university of South Africa student Mthokozisi Nkwanyana in Durban last week.

Nkwanyana, 22, died after police arrived outside the institution to calm the situation during a protest by students.

It is believed Nkwanyana died on the pavement opposite the campus.

KwaZulu-Natal ICD provincial head Tabisa Ralo said that while they remained satisfied with an initial postmortem report from the state pathologist that confirmed that Nkwanyana died of a heart attack, they were merely following normal procedures.

"This is part of the process. It is an ICD-initiated independent pathologist's report."

She said the first state pathologist's report had shown that Nkwanyana died of cardiac arrest.

"It also shows that there was no sign of teargas or pepper spray used in the [police] operation," Ralo said.
