Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
The police in Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast are offering a R45000 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the nine Umzinto police cell escapees.
Captain Vincent Pandarum said 12 prisoners escaped in June but three had been rearrested.
Those rearrested are Sduduzo Buthelezi, a prisoner awaiting trial for rape and armed robbery, Muleki Ngcongolo for rape and Sibusiso Mjoka for housebreaking.
He said the police were still searching for Sizwe Sukude, Sanele Xolo and Zithulele Shange, who were in police custody awaiting a rape trial.
Others are Siphiwe Dlamini for attempted rape and theft, Sphamandla Luthuli, Mnelesi Xaba, Peter Tembe, Rodney Maphumulo, and Sihle Msabala for housebreaking. They are still at large.
"A reward of up to R5000 is being offered for information that leads to the successful arrest of each escapee.
The public is cautioned against confronting these men since they are considered dangerous," Pandarum said.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of any of the escapees can contact their nearest police station toll free on 10111, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or detective Inspector Steyn Moonsamy of the task team on 039-974-1151 or 072-9262 538.
