It was not our day.

Those were the words of SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt after his side was booted out of the lucrative MTN 8 second-leg semifinal following a 4-4 aggregate scoreline at Super Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

But it was a shame for Matsatsantsa a Pitori, who played their hearts out to outwit and outshine Sundowns in an exciting game.

For the Brazilians it was sheer luck that saw them advancing to the final of this competition, but all in all United showed a lot of grit and determination.

United coach Hunt said there was nothing they could do after putting up that kind of fight from the beginning to the end.

"We played well but we were unfortunate. The guys played their hearts out. They showed commitment and a will to win, but luck was not on our side.

"But we're going to start picking up the pieces and will be going all out for the challenges ahead. We're down but not out because there are a number of competitions on offer in the league."

Sundowns media officer Daniel Mudau said: "We're happy that we went through after a struggle. The guys fought hard."

The game was a battle of the titans. Both sides fought and died with their boots firmly laced in this drama-filled encounter.

United striker Anthony Laffor was taken to hospital after he suffered hip and neck injuries after a kamikaze tackle from Shere Lekgothoane. It was later reported that he was in a stable condition.

United opened the scoring through Daine Klate's wonderful goal in the 54th minute. They held on to the lead until it was cancelled by Surprise Moriri in the 86th minute.

United's Brent Carelse scored from the penalty spot to take the game into extra time.

Once more Klate put United in the lead until Lerato Chabangu scored to end the game 3-2 [4-4 on aggregate].
