North West MEC for community safety Phenye Vilakazi says the slogan of the South African Police Service should be: "We are armed and dangerous, to protect and serve."
Vilakazi was speaking at the induction cere mony of 500 constables at the Mmabatho Civic Centre on Friday.
"Criminals must be afraid of the police, not the other way round," Vilakazi said. "If you are afraid of criminals, you must resign."
He cautioned policemen who were involved in ATM bombings.
"South Africa is facing a serious crime problem. You must conduct yourselves in a manner befitting the uniform."
Superintendent Didintle Molefe said some police officers married criminals.
"You join the force to protect the community and you must behave like men and women in blue," Molefe said.
