The Mpumalanga provincial government is mourning the death of George Msisa, chief financial officer of the economic development and planning department.

Msiza, who has held the position since 2001, died on August 15 after a short illness.

He was born on October 19 1966.

Msiza contributed to a number of processes and projects that were distinguished by sound financial management.

During his early years in the public service he took part in the commission that drafted the Public Finance Management Act, which has been acclaimed as one of the best pieces of legislation since the new democratic dispensation.

Before joining the Mpumalanga department of economic development and planning in 2001, Msiza worked in the Parliament in Cape Town.

He later served as financial adviser to the Embekweni municipality in Paarl, in the Western Cape, the office of the auditor-general in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, and also at the department of environmental affairs and tourism.

As chief financial officer Msiza took part in the restructuring of the department and its agencies (Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency and Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency), taking care of financial matters .

He was a loyal and dedicated cadre who jealously guarded the prescripts that govern financial management in the provincial government.

"He will be missed by his family, members of the staff, his colleagues and in the chief financial officers' forum.

He will also be missed by his movement, the ideals and programmes of which he was dedi- cated to, and indeed by the whole Mpumalanga government," said MEC Graig Padayachee.

Msiza will be buried tomorrow at the Loding Cemetery in Loding village, near Marapyane in the KwaMhlanga area of Mpumalanga.

The service starts at his home at 8am.
