Four teenage girls have been arrested and charged with the murder of a school girl in northern KwaZulu-Natal, police said yesterday.
Nobuhle Khumalo, 17, a pupil at Ethangeni Combined School, died on the way to hospital three weeks ago after a group of girls aged between 17 and 24 punched and threw stones at her for being an "arrogant virgin".
Nobuhle's grandmother found her in a locked bedroom. There was a container of pills besides her and she suspected suicide.
Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela yesterday said: "Police opened an inquest and our postmortem results show that she died of severe head injuries resulting from assault," Magudulela said.
Samkeliso Chiliza, a teacher, said: "She was walking to the shops with her granny when the girls attacked her.
"They accused Nobuhle of thinking that she was special because of her virginity."
He said police at the scene did not arrest the girls.
Her grandmother suffered a broken arm in the attack.
