'We need water, not a musical'

The Mpumalanga government hasn't got its act together in providing water to 100000 Bushbuckridge residents, but is going to fork out more than R22million for a play to celebrate an ANC hero who led a potato boycott in the last century.

"This is absolutely outrageous and amounts to the misuse of public funds while thousands of residents in the province don't have access to water," Bushbuckridge residents' spokesman Mabalana Sibuyana told Sowetan.

"The Mpumalanga government has failed the Bushbuckridge citizens.

"Now they are wasting R22million on a musical and another R2,7million on a statue of [ANC hero] Gert Sibande. It's unacceptable."

The Bushbuckridge residents are so angry they have threatened to approach the SA Human Rights Commission to urgently launch an investigation into "the continued human rights abuses by the provincial government".

"We believe they are guilty because they are denying us our basic right to water," Sibuyana said.

Last month three women fell to their death in a well in Nkomo village, Acornhoek, searching for water.
