Police in Limpopo have launched an investigation into the death of a man who was stoned to death by an angry mob at the weekend.
The incident happened on Sunday morning at Majakaneng village in Tafelkop.
The victim was allegedly caught while trying to steal from a house in the area.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said a family in the village woke up to find a man inside their house at about 5am.
The family screamed for assistance and villagers immediately responded to their calls, he said.
The man, he said, was caught while still inside the house.
"The angry mob then started assaulting him with all sorts of objects until he lost consciousness," said Ramatseba.
He said police went to the scene and upon arrival they found the man bleeding profusely. It was discovered that he had also been stoned.
"The victim was taken to the nearby Groblersdal Hospital in a critical condition.
"But he died later, apparently from the injuries he sustained during the beatings," he added.
According to Ramatseba, the man died at about 5pm.
He identified the dead man as Albert Matlala, 28, who lived in the same area.
No one has been arrested in connection with the matter and police investigations are still continuing.
