Talent full house for Carfax

Music lovers will gather in Johannesburg on August 29 at 8pm for a full programme of local and West African music.

Leading the pack at Carfax in Newtown are local Afropop sensations Bongo Maffin and the soulful MXO, and West African darlings D'banj and Omawumi.

Bongo Maffin, the whiz kids of Afropop, have dropped one hot CD after another, dishing out classics such as Thathi'Sgubhu, Kaurawoni and Ndiphendule among others. They have gone on to win awards and dazzle local and international audiences.

Interestingly the group is among the few outfits that successfully work together while also pursuing solo careers. They hold the record for keeping a group intact by retaining original members Stoane, Jahseed and Thandiswa.

The only member who left is Speedy, who has carved out a successful solo career for himself.

Equally exciting is the inclusion of MXO, the soulful dude with the gravelly voice he uses like a well-oiled instrument. He took the complacent industry by storm and left many ladies pining for his sizzling act.

His material is not only captivating but also the stuff that classics are made of. He surprised his fans and peers by taking a long time to complete a follow-up CD - but the few tracks now on radio suggest it has been worth the wait. Get down to Zandiy'bone and Sista Kunjani.

And then there's the inimitable D'banj, A talented all-rounder who can sing and dance and is a stunning programme director who knows how to talk!

He came here last year to perform and accept a Channel O award. And proved to be an excellent MC. He is also a Ghana Music Award winner and has a host of all-time hits such as Why Me? , Koko and Funk Up .

Dubbed the The West African Tour, performances by well-known Nigerian MC and comedian Sayilaw, Ghananian singer Praye, new Nigerian find F Shaw and newcomer to the south Omawum complete the line-up.

Tickets cost R250 and R700 for VIPs at Computicket.
