Scorpions debate ends

About 200 people packed the Kwezi Centre in Guguletu, Cape Town, yesterday for the final day of provincial public hearings on two new laws to disband the Scorpions.

The hearings into the National Prosecuting Authority and SAPS Amendment bills were convened by Parliament's portfolio committees on justice and constitutional development and safety and security to get the public's feeling about the dissolution of the Scorpions.

With only eight months before the general election, political parties see the event as an opportunity to promote themselves. Although justice portfolio committee chairman Yunus Carrim said "there is no electioneering here", the ACDP, ANC and DA all rushed to hang their banners around the room. - Anna Majavu
