Johan Christian "JC" Welman yesterday saw his best friend of nine years being slashed to death as a crazed pupil, brandishing a samurai sword, ran amok in the school yard.

After slashing Grade 9 pupil Jacques Pretorious, 16, the masked Ninja killer attacked another pupil, Stefan Brauwer, and two gardeners, Samson Manamela and Joseph Kodeseng.

"We were walking together to the school hall when the incident happened. When we got to the principal's office matric pupils were standing there," Welman said.

"As we were walking past, one of them screamed: 'Pasop, hy is mal' ['Beware, he's crazy'].

"When I turned around I saw the 18-year-old matric boy pull out a sword from its sheath and slash Jacques' neck. Although he had his school uniform on, he wore a mask. When he took it off, his face was painted black. I had never seen him before.

"My mind went blank and I ran to call my father. When he came, I tried talking to Jacques to make sure he stayed conscious but it was too late. There was so much blood around him."

At the hospital, Kodeseng said: "When I saw matric pupils running, I thought they were playing. They are always playing with black masks with dreadlocks. Samson and I continued to do what we were doing.

"As we were walking, the guy came towards us wielding his sword. I thought that the sword was a toy.

"The boy aimed at Sam's neck but he managed to shield himself with his hand. He then came for me and hit my face.

"I tried running but was weak. I was bleeding badly and started seeing stars."

JC's father Johan said: "I talked to the mother of the guy who slashed Jacques and she said she was worried last week when he was constantly on the Internet looking at Ninjas."

The matric pupil, who was arrested minutes after the incident at the Nic Diederichs Technical High School in Krugersdorp, is thought to have been influenced by metal band Slipknot.

West Rand police spokesman Captain Jacob Raboroko said he was charged with murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The two men were discharged from the Krugersdorp Private Hospital, but Brauwer is still recovering.

The school, where JC and Jacques met for the last time yesterday, was deserted.
