Politicians and senior government officials had to roll up their sleeves and quickly construct a stage for Women's Day celebrations in Mpumalanga.

This happened after service provider Lebo Zulu, director of Lebo Z Production, pulled out at the 11th hour and left arrangements dangling.

Premier Thabang Makwetla's brother, also Thabang Makwetla, who is senior events manager in the culture, sport and recreation department, angered Zulu with terms and conditions in the contract for building the stage.

The departments' MEC, Jabu Mahlangu, public works MEC Madala Masuku and other government officials helped to construct the stage.

Zulu said Makwetla forced her to work with businessman Jorge Gomes of Pro Audio Music.

She said he recommended in a letter that she should work with Gomes because she did not deliver at last year's Human Rights Day celebrations.

Zulu said Makwetla was hellbent on forcing her to rope in Gomes' audio services at Saturday's celebrations in Secunda.

Zulu's letter reads in part: "I find it atrocious that the department would set out a condition that aims to dictate which supplier I should use if I want my company to be appointed as a service provider."

Departmental spokesman Sammy Mpatlanyane confirmed that his department received the letter.

"We had a meeting with Makwetla and Zulu and all the thorny issues have been resolved amicably," he said.
