Lazarus Molefe Matladi was a policeman of note who dedicated his whole life to the police force and subscribed to the notion that once a cop always a cop.

Born in George Goch in 1921 he started school at Bapong Primary in Rustenburg before enrolling at Bapong Senior Secondary where he completed his matric.

He started working at Plastic and Metal Industries in Johannesburg but an insatiable desire for justice led him to enrol for a course in safety and security at the Benoni SAP college in 1957, which is today known as the SAPS Mechanical School.

He started working at the Johannesburg college as a constable and pursued his studies further, which led him to be promoted to the rank of sergeant at the Actonville police station in Benoni. He was inducted into the murder and robbery unit in Brakpan until his retirement in 1989 after a career of 32 years.

A keen soccer player during the 1940s, Matladi played for the Eastern Gunners of George Goch, where he was considered a midfield maestro.

In his retirement he joined the Benoni Association of Retired Professionals, a charity for senior citizens.

His daughter Morudi says her father lived life to the full and she will remember him for his strictness and fatherliness.

Matladi will be buried at the Lala Ngoxolo Cemetery in Crystal Park tomorrow after a service at 8am in the Lutheran Church in Turton Street, Daveyton.
