At least 21 corpses have been lying unclaimed in a Limpopo hospital's mortuary and efforts are being made to give them a pauper's burial.
Some of the bodies of unidentified people have been lying in the St Rita's Hospital in Nebo, near Jane Furse, for more than a year.
Authorities at the hospital said they were running out of storage space and would have no choice but to bury the unclaimed bodies anonymously.
Provincial department of health and social development spokesman Phuti Seloba said efforts had been made to trace the families of the deceased but without success.
He said hospital officials did not know where the people came from or how they had died.
"We have asked the Makhuduthamaga municipality for space at any local cemetery to bury the bodies since our mortuary is overcrowded," Seloba said.
Makhuduthamaga municipal manager Morebudi Thamaga confirmed that they had been approached by the department to find burial space for the deceased.
He said the municipality had secured land at Kgoshi Mampuru Sekoati's village, where the bodies are likely to be buried.
