Civil society organisations have called for the establishment of a transitional authority led by a neutral individual to run Zimbabwe.
In a declaration yesterday civil society organisations also called on the transitional authority to govern the country for a maximum of 18 months, during which a new constitution should be negotiated and adopted.
An election should then be held.
" The transitional authority should be headed by an individual who is not a member of Zanu-PF or the MDC," say the organisations.
They are also calling for broader representation in the current negotiations, saying they should include representatives from labour organisations, women's and children's rights groups, churches and various other interest groups.
While applauding the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mediation efforts led by President Thabo Mbeki, they believe the right environment should be created if those efforts are to succeed
These included the cessation of political violence, the release of all political prisoners and providing humanitarian aid to victims of the economic meltdown.
The groups plan to march to the SADC summit in Sandton from Saturday to register their concern about Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
In the case of Swaziland they have called for the unbanning of political parties, the return of political exiles and the holding of an election.
