Parliament has tasked Premiership clubs' public relations officers to develop a blueprint on how to attract more people to Bafana Bafana games for the 2010 World Cup and beyond.

Sello Nduna of Bloemfontein Celtic and Ajax Cape Town's Thabiso Mekuto are in charge of the task team developing such a document.

Butana Komphela, chairman of the portfolio committee on sport and recreation, said they opted for the PROs because they were in touch with the supporters on a daily basis.

"We [politicians] can make a call to South Africans to rally behind Bafana Bafana, but there is no guarantee that the majority of the people will heed our call.

"PROs of our clubs are very influential, multitudes of South Africa flock to the match venues if PROs of Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs or Bloemfontein Celtic urge them to do so.

"The project is gaining momentum. Louis [Tshakoane] has phoned to say he is fully behind our project and will be assisting us."

The fiery Komphela said government was prepared to fund this noble idea of mobilising support for Bafana Bafana.

"We asked them to come up with the way forward programme that will ensure that Bafana Bafana always play in front of capacity crowds. We have seen in other countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Egypt where the match venues are always full when their national teams are playing.

"As it was the case during the Vodacom Challenge, we want to see all South Africans supporting Bafana Bafana.

"As part of the mobilisation process, we are teaming up with SABC and SuperSport where more than one million Bafana Bafana replica jerseys and balls will be given to the fans when they come to the games.

"The aim is to encourage South Africans in general to wear the national colours, not only for the World Cup but also beyond 2010.

l Fifa has appointed top Malawian referee Verson Lwanja to handle the crucial 2010 World Cup-Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Nigeria.

He will be assisted by compatriots Moffat Champiti and Michael Makoto, with Robert Kalyoto Ngosi serving as fourth official.
