Hit-and-run accidents are on the increase in Mpumalanga with 10 reported deaths of pedestrians since the beginning of the year.

The latest incident happened at the corner of Samora Machel Drive and Henshal Street in the capital Nelspruit on Friday afternoon.

The victim of the hit-and-run accident was an unidentified woman who was hit by a speeding car as she walked across Henshal Street shortly after 4pm.

A car knocked the woman down and missed two others but sped away, shooting through a red robot.

The woman was taken to hospital.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane warned motorists to remember that they vowed to stop when involved in accidents at the time they applied for driver's licences.

"A driver is bound by law to stop after being involved in any accident," Khoabane said yesterday

"In a case where a pedestrian is knocked down it remains the driver's first obligation to stop and ascertain the nature of the victim's injuries."

Meanwhile, another driver failed to stop after his vehicle ran over a man who was lying on the side of a road after being hit by another car on Friday afternoon.

The incident happened at Vosman at about 8pm.

The unidentified man was walking along the road when he was struck by the left mirror of a car.

He fell to the ground and another speeding vehicle ran over him. The driver did not stop.

The man died on the spot

The police have opened a case of culpable homicide.

"Investigations are continuing and we are calling on anyone with information to come forward," Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Izak van Zyl said yesterday.
