Two police reservists were arrested for corruption after they allegedly tried to extort money from a woman in Jabulani, police said yesterday.

Police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela said the two women reservists, aged 29 and 39 respectively, first went to a 58- year-old woman in Jabulani three weeks ago.

They told her that her daughter had been arrested but that the case was thrown out.

Then they told her that the case against her daughter was being reopened.

They demanded R750000 from her to quash the case, but the woman said she could pay only R20000.

The reservists agreed to meet her on the Saturday at the Jabulani Mall.

Meanwhile, the woman went and reported the matter to the police.

They followed up and hid at the venue of the meeting at the mall after they had photocopied all the money to be given to the reservists.

The woman then went with the reservists into a bathroom at the mall and gave them the money.

The police stormed in and arrested them.

They established that the reservists were based at the Moroka police station.

The suspects are being detained at the Jabulani police station and have been charged with corruption.

Meanwhile, two other reservists, attached to the Booysens police station, are expected to appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court today to face charges of theft.

They allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of cash while raiding premises in La Rochelle, Booysens on Friday night.

They were arrested on Saturday after one of the people whose house was raided opened a case against them.

Also, 10 men including a police officer were arrested for allegedly stealing railway tracks in Grootvlei near Balfour, Mpumalanga.

Police caught them red-handed and pounced on the group while they were loading 82 tracks into a bakkie.

They are also expected to appear in court today.
