The death of Patricia Nomsa Maphanga, 48, a senior prosecutor at the Benoni magistrate's court, has robbed the justice system of a dedicated public servant.
Maphanga was born on February 10 1960 in Barberton. She completed matric at Khumbula High and obtained her law degree at the University of Limpopo: Turfloop Campus in 1983.
Her first stint as prosecutor was at the Kabokweni magistrate's court in 1984, a position she held for five years.
From December 1987 to April 1995 she was the control prosecutor at the Elukwatini magistrate's court.
She was promoted to senior public prosecutor in 1996.
Maphanga was later transferred to Benoni, where she remained until her untimely death on July 30.
Despite the pressures and the demanding schedule of her office, Maphanga managed to complete her LLB degree through Unisa.
Maphanga was also actively involved in the local community policing forum structures in and around Benoni.
She was also a prominent member of the Benoni justice forum, which she served as secretary.
A colleague of Maphanga's, Darkie Phillip Mbanyana, yesterday likened her to a mother hen.
"Sis Nomsa was forthright, a disciplinarian who called a spade a spade," he said.
"We will remember her kindness and fairness."
Maphanga was not only a career woman but also the mother to four children, Siboniso, Buhle, Siphiwe and Thabang.
"My mother was brought up a Catholic but because of her work, she belonged to various denominations," said her son Siboniso.
"She was very cultural and believed in the concept of ubuntu."
She will be buried at the Emjindini Cemetery tomorrow.
The funeral service will held at the Barbeton City Hall from 7am.
The cortege leaves for the cemetery at 10am.
